March of Time -- outtakes -- Paintings from the Louvre being returned to the museum; coffin-making in France; Melun prison in France

    Overview

    Description
Large covered trucks pull up outside the Louvre, the entrance to which is guarded by armed police. Shots of large crates containing works of art as they are unloaded from the trucks. A woman checks off items against a list.

01:24:52 Hearses enter and exit the garage of "104 rue d'Aubervilliers, the building of municipal undertakers" (according to the dope sheet). Interior shots of men building coffins and coffins traveling down a conveyor belt. Completed coffins, some of which are child-size, being unloaded from a dolly. The dope sheet states that some 7,000 coffins are contained in this building, due to the great demand in the immediate postwar period: "Size no. 12 is in great demand for children of about 10 and also small boxes for still-born babies. The underfed mothers are not strong enough to carry their unborn babies for the full period. We were told that the death toll for children is now double that of pre-war."

01:27:39 Various views of the exterior of Melun prison in the Paris area. Prisoners, described in the dope sheet as ordinary criminals rather than poltical prisoners, march around the exercise yard. Shots of prisoners working in a carpentry workshop; interior of a sewing workshop with prisoners at work.
