African American Athletes — Medalists
African-American athletes won 14 medals, nearly one-fourth of the 56 medals awarded the U.S. team in all events. American journalists established a scoring system that gave 10 points to the first-place winner, and 5 to 1 points to the second- through sixth-place winners. The headline in this newspaper states that African-American athletes had won “70 of 187 U.S. points.” August 8, 1936.
