John Lampe is Chair of the Department of History at the University of Maryland and is Senior Consultant on Eastern European Studies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. His most recent book is Yugoslavia as History, Twice there was a country for Cambridge University Press. His revised and updated edition was published in February 2000. He has also published three other books on Balkan history and numerous articles. As an expert on Eastern Europe and the Balkans, he appears regularly on National Public Radio and on American and Canadian television. He has chaired the Russian Area Studies Program on campus and served as Director of the East European Studies program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington from 1987 to 1997. A Foreign Service Officer, in the State Department from 1964 to 1967, he was adjunct chair of Balkan Area Studies at the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of State from 1980 to 1988 and editor of the comparative studies segment of Southeastern Europe from 1976 to 1980. He was appointed chair of the Department of History in 1997.
