Irene Khan, who is the Secretary General of Amnesty International. She joined Amnesty International as the organization’s seventh Secretary General in August of 2001. She took the helm of Amnesty as the first woman, the first Asian, and the first Muslim to guide the world’s largest human rights organization. She came to Amnesty from a long and distinguished career at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, where she worked in a variety of positions, both in headquarters and in the field. And previously, she has been trained as a lawyer at University of Manchester and at Harvard Law.
