Staring Genocide in the Face

Jerry Fowler, former staff director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Committee on Conscience, traveled to Chad in May 2004 to investigate the threat of genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan. The Committee on Conscience, which guides the museum's genocide prevention activities, issued a genocide alert for Sudan in July 2004. Fowler interviewed refugees spread over hundreds of miles in eastern Chad. In this photo essay, Fowler comments on his travels through Eastern Chad, the people he met there, and the region's hopes for the future.
