Refugees on trains in Germany, 1947

After the war, Julien Bryan returned to Europe under contract for the International Refugee Organization (IRO) and the United Nations Rehabilitation and Relief Organization (UNRRA). He was tasked with capturing images of Europe rebuilding. This 16mm camera original color film of Bremen, Germany shows displaced persons (DPs) on a transport sponsored by the IRO. In a letter Julien Bryan sent to his wife back home, he wrote, “Obtaining splendid films of work of UNRRA mission...untold suffering and hardships created here by Germans.... deeply impressed by able serious men on UNRRA staff. They assure me distribution thorough and wise…. Above everything else can assure you food and medicine reaches children. Terrific story here…”
