When the President disbanded the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) by Executive Order 9621 of September 20, 1945, the Research and Analysis Branch of that organization became part of the State Department. The Branch continued the preparation of reports and studies that had begun under the predecessor of the OSS, the Office of the Coordinator of Information. Various organizational units were responsible for preparing intelligence reports over the next sixteen years, including the Interim Research and Intelligence Service, the Office of Intelligence Coordination and Liaison, the office of Research and Intelligence, the Office of Intelligence Research, and the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, which discontinued intelligence reports in 1961.
