Paul Etchemaite Date March 31, 2008 11:47 PM |
Looking for information on my father Jean Etchemaite of Basque origin deported from his native France to become a forced laborer for the Nazis. 1943 - 1945. He passed away in 1992. He was never open to talking about his camp experience. I remember asking him which camp he was held at a few times in order to start a conversation about the topic but I never got a straight answer. He would just walk away or change the subject. Until one day when he actually answered. I was stunned, he whispered "Buchenwald". That is all he said and all he would say. It was as if he was ashamed to talk about it. Or as if whatever he would tell me would be so shocking, I would not believe it. It affected his whole live though, because he was often depressed. As kids if we were watching a war movie on TV in the afternoon, he would unplug the TV and tell my friends to go home and tell me to go to my room. He committed suicide in 1992 with photographs from Holocaust history magazines in his pockets. I was able to find his original deportation papers and train boarding pass signed by Nazi General Koch in 1943 from Bordeau France. I have all the papers but no story.

Mrs Greenberg, In my previous email I forgot to mention that for the name FAIKES there is only one entry in the phone directory:
Mark L & Michelle M Faikes home: 1308 Leamington Circle Irmo, SC 29063-8945 phone number unavailable AGE: 63
There is no entry for FAJKES.
Because the name is so rare, the above subscriber may be a descendant of your relatives.
