2013 Risa K. Lambert Luncheon Demonstrates Chicago’s Commitment
At the 2013 Risa K. Lambert Luncheon in Chicago, more than 2,500 Museum supporters gathered together to pledge to survivors that Holocaust remembrance and education will remain a priority for them and for their children and grandchildren.
The record-breaking luncheon raised $5.9 million—more than $2 million ahead of last year’s successful event—and was chaired for the first time by a child of survivors, Joseph Gutman, and his wife, Sheila. Together the Gutmans led a program showcasing the breadth of the Museum’s work and marking the official launch in Chicago of the Museum’s comprehensive campaign, Never Again: What You Do Matters.
The Museum also presented its inaugural National Leadership Award to Ann Wolk Krouse and Paul Krouse who, along with their four children and eight grandchildren, were honored for their unwavering support of the Museum and their leadership of the Chicago community. Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel and Illinois governor Pat Quinn offered remarks, as did National Campaign Co-Chair Lester Crown and his grand-nephew, Jordan Goodman.
The capstone to the afternoon’s program was a performance by Mona Golabek, a concert pianist, Grammy nominee, and radio host, and a child of a survivor. Mona spoke about her mother’s escape from Vienna on a Kindertransport to England and her own desire to continue the work of educating young people about the Holocaust.
As the Museum begins its third decade, the importance of its mission to ensure the permanent relevance of the Holocaust and respond to the challenges confronting our world is more crucial than ever. But we can’t do it alone. The Museum is grateful to the Chicago community for its dedicated support and its commitment to fulfilling the promise of Never Again.
