American soldiers view the bodies of prisoners laid out in rows in an open field at Ohrdruf, a sub-camp of Buchenwald in Germany. The 4th Armored and 89th Infantry Divisions liberated Ohrdruf on April 4, 1945. It was the first concentration camp American forces encountered and, as such, it revealed the extent of German atrocities in the camps. Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, and George S. Patton visited Ohrdruf on April 12, 1945 to witness to the conditions there.
