GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Baltimore Jewish Council (BJC), is the community relations and political arm of the Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.

It represents Jewish organizations and congregations in the Greater Baltimore area on social, political, and humanitarian issues that affect Jews and their quality of life locally, nationally and worldwide. The BJC works closely with local, state and federal authorities, as well as other ethnic and faith groups to build strong partnerships that support the interests of the Jewish community.

Several different committees are involved in various aspects of the BJC’s mandate. One of them is the Holocaust Remembrance Commission, which sponsors workshops for teachers, provides speakers for home gatherings and community events, organizes a community-wide Yom Hashoah commemoration, and sponsors interfaith programs for students.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:A video oral history project was undertaken in the late 1980’s under the auspices of the Holocaust Remembrance Commission. Interviews were recorded primarily with Baltimore area survivors, as well as some concentration camp liberators. The project was conducted in affiliation with the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University. Master copies of 142 testimonies are stored at the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University. Video copies of the interviews are also available to local scholars and researchers at the Joseph Meyerhoff Library of Baltimore Hebrew University. The first interviews were conducted in 1988. The project was discontinued in June, 1995.
