GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:Baltimore Hebrew University was founded as Baltimore Hebrew College and Teacher’s Training School in 1919 to promote Jewish scholarship and academic excellence. Baltimore Hebrew University's Joseph Meyerhoff Library is a specialized academic library of Jewish Studies for students, scholars, and the wider community.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The Baltimore Jewish Community Archive for Holocaust Testimonies was established in 1988 primarily interviewing survivors living in the Baltimore area.

One hundred thiry-eight videotaped testimonies were produced by the Baltimore Jewish Council's Holocaust Survivor Videotaping Project. The local collection is affiliated with the Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University.

The interviews reflect a wide range of experiences endured by European Jews from 1933 to 1945: emigres; escapees to Soviet territories not occupied by the Germans; others who spent the war in hiding; and those who survived concentration camps. The experiences of non-Jews including servicemen who helped liberate the camps, witnesses, and rescuers were also documented as part of the project.

Interested persons may make an appointment and register to view the testimonies at the library. The videos are listed in the library's online catalog, with interviewees identified by first name and last name initial. A printed subject index and summaries of the interviews are available.

Records pertaining to the Video Archive can be searched online through the Meyerhoff Library’s website. Tapes may not be taken from the library, and material from the tapes may not be copied or published without the permission of the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University.
