GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The American Jewish Archives (AJA) was founded in 1947, and is committed to preserving a documentary heritage of the religious, organizational, economic, cultural personal social and family life of American Jewry.

Located at the Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion, the AJA contains nearly 8,000 linear feet of archives, manuscripts, print materials, photographs, audio and video tapes, microfilm and genealogical materials.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The AJA holds nearly 3000 audio and video recordings consisting of oral histories, lectures, religious services and music. Holocaust-related oral history holdings include the Brazilian Oral History Project as well as oral histories conducted under the auspices of the National Council of Jewish Women. Interviews were conducted by members of the Cincinnati chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women. This collection is catalogued under the title “Project Eternity: A Joint Program of the American Jewish Archives and the Cincinnati Jewish Survivors of Nazism.” It contains audio tape recordings and transcripts of interviews (conducted between 1980-1982) with Cincinnati area Holocaust survivors.

Two other Holocaust-related collections include audio interviews with 12 Holocaust survivors who later converted to Christianity, as well as accounts of American soldiers who liberated Nazi concentration camps. While some of the latter are available only in written form, others are recorded on audio cassette.

In addition, there are many other individual audio and video Holocaust-related interviews which are not part of the collections mentioned above.
