GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Lehigh Valley Jewish Archives/ Holocaust Resource Center (HRC) of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley was established in 1982 to conduct educational outreach services with area public and parochial school districts as well as community groups and individuals. The resources of the Center include approximately 1000 books on the Holocaust and over 1000 books on Jewish history, culture and religion that may be checked out free-of-charge by the public. Other resources include audio and videotapes, displays of artwork and artifacts. The Center is also the home of the Lehigh Valley Jewish Archives and as such maintains a collection of books and memorabilia on the history of the Valley's Jewish community.

The HRC works with the Pennsylvania Holocaust Education Task Force (a program of Gratz College serving Pennsylvania educators) to develop Holocaust curriculum for teachers throughout the state. The Center sponsors yearly writing contests on "Kristallnacht" and "What the Holocaust Means to Me" for area high school and middle school students. Staff members participate in the "Youth and Prejudice" conferences sponsored by the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding held at Muhlenberg College.

Finally, the HRC is expanding its outreach by offering teacher training workshops, teacher in-services, prejudice-reduction workshops and increased speaker services. The Center is open to the public Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 A.M. to 4 P.M. Other hours are by appointment.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The HRC’s Oral History collection includes audio-cassette tapes of Holocaust survivors and descendants of early Jewish settlers of the Lehigh Valley that were collected by the late Ned Shulman, former Director of the Center. Videotapes of survivor Judy Freeman and her husband Lou Freeman, former residents of the Lehigh Valley, are also part of the collection.
