GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Center for Research in Social Change was conceived in the early 1960s by the Emory University Department of Sociology and the Department of Psychiatry of the School of Medicine. Initial objectives were to promote the study of social change and to train students in methods of social research. Dr. Fred Roberts Crawford was appointed first director in 1966.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The Witness to the Holocaust Project, 1978-1983, documents the liberation of concentration camps in Europe at the end of World War II. The late Fred Roberts Crawford, Director of Emory University's Center for Research in Social Change, founded and directed the project.

Dr. Crawford served as an Air Force pilot in World War II and was captured in Hungary after bailing out of his damaged plane. He was mistaken for a Jew and almost lynched on the spot, but a crucifix on his dogtag saved his life. While awaiting transfer to a prisoner of war camp, he witnessed Jewish inmates being tortured and executed.

Dr. Crawford was a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III. He visited the newly liberated concentration camp Dachau shortly after his own release from Stalag Luft III. The difference in conditions and treatment for prisoners of war, protected by the Geneva Convention, compared to the cruel treatment inflicted on the inmates of Dachau impressed Dr. Crawford profoundly.

The Witness to the Holocaust Project began in 1978. The project includes recorded interviews with 110 concentration camp liberators as well as tapes and transcripts of conversations with about a dozen camp survivors, photographs and film housed in the Woodruff Library of Emory University. There are also two interviews with rescuers -- one from Hungary, one from Denmark.

Other related oral history collections include: 1) interviews conducted on Novermber 3, 1993 with Steven Kropelnicki, Judson Mills, and Walter Bailey. (Five audio tapes with transcripts). 2) The alumni association did a series of interviews with World War II participants at a reunion in 1995 conducted by the alumni association. Transcriptions were also to have been made of the interviews.
