GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:After the armistice of 1943 in Italy, Allied forces controlled most of Italian peninsula. However, German forces still occupied several regions of Northern Italy. It was in the city of Bozen that they established a transit and prison camp, from where some 45,000 persons (up to 37,000 political prisoners and some 8,000 Jews) were imprisoned and some further transported to labor and concentration camps elsewhere.

The oral history collection at Bozen, Italy was produced under the auspices of two communal authorities: the provincial capital of Bozen, and the city of Nova Milanese. The interviews were conducted as part of a project titled "History and Memory: The Camp at Bozen" that began in 1995. A similar project, titled ""…Not to forget" had been underway in Nova Milanese since 1993. The goal of both projects was to provide educational material for use in area schools. From 1996 onwards both communal authorities combined the projects into one and have worked together on it.

A major part of this effort includes conducting interviews with former prisoners of the Bozen camp. Interviewees are asked about the circumstances of their arrests, their interrogations, imprisonment, forced labor experiences, and eventual liberation. Those that returned from deportations to other camps as well are asked about these experiences.

Interviews are conducted in French and German as well as Italian.
