GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The collection was not produced by an organization, but by a couple (husband and wife) acting on their own initiative. They were trying to learn about Jewish experiences in Bulgaria and trying to answer the question why this country, an ally of the Germans, saved the Jews within their borders. They knew those in Macedonia and Thrace (territories conquered by the Germans and turned over to Bulgaria to administer) were sent to Auschwitz. But they were curious why those within the 1939 borders were all saved.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The Freeds had friends in Bulgaria who introduced them to older people -- Bulgarians who were Christians or Jews willing to be interviewed on tape about their recollections of the treatment of the Jews and the attitudes they encountered during WWII in Bulgaria when that country was an ally of the Nazis. The Bulgarian interviewees were randomly selected according to those who experienced or had knowledge about the saving of the Bulgarian Jews within the country's pre-WWII borders, or the deportation of Jews from Thrace and Macedonia during WWII. They had an interpreter in some of the interviews, others spoke English. Anne Freed interviewed the people after first explaining their interest and purpose; Roy Freed did the videotaping. Most interviews took place in an office of the Center for the Study of Democracy; one was in an old age home; several were in the peoples' home. All but one took place in Bulgaria. One was in the United States.

There are a total of 14 tapes comprising 28 hours and 25 interviews.
