GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Auschwitz Foundation was created in 1980 by the Belgian Association of Ex-Political Prisoners of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Camps and Prisons of Silesia. It is a study and documentation center promoting analyses, publications and research on the complex historical processes which led to the creation of Nazi concentration camps and the genocide of Jews and Roma. The Auschwitz Foundation also works to integrate remembrance of Nazi crimes and genocides into contemporary historical consciousness.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:Victims who survived the Nazis' crimes and genocide are those interviewed for this oral history-project (which consists of interviews as well as audio and audiovisual dialogues). Testimonies cover the interviewees' entire life history as well as experiences in extermination, concentration, and transit camps, ghettos and Nazi prisons. The testimonies also contain interviews with political prisoners, resistance fighters, and partisans.

The process of audiovisual recording involves: A register's protocol, a biographical sheet, a map indicating the Nazi concentration and extermination camps where the interviewee was principally detained, and his or her personal documents are enclosed in the interview put into the archives. The audio interviews have so far been partially published in the foundation's quarterly.

The Auschwitz Foundation has developed a number of operational steps to improve its procedures for collecting testimonies. The witness is asked to fill out a long questionnaire on his personal background. This pre-interview serves as a detailed background of the facts and information of the witness' life.

After this, the Foundation's academic staff then gathers research material. The interview is carried out by two interviewers without a fixed agenda. The attempt is to try not to talk too much except when to stimulate more detail or in order to reactivate the story. There is only one objective in an interview -- to listen attentively to the interviewee's story.
