| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: | The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is America’s national institution for the documentation, study, and interpretation of Holocaust history, and serves as this country’s memorial to the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust. |
| | |
| OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION: | The Museum’s oral history archive contains over 8,500 interviews, of which approximately 6,000 are video and 2,500 are audio. Many have been collected from other organizations and individuals, while over 1,800 have been produced by the Museum’s own Department of Oral History.
The Department of Oral History has produced interviews with survivors of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, including Jews, Roma [“Gypsies”], Polish gentiles, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, and political prisoners. These were conducted in several countries: Belarus, Czech Republic, Greece , Israel , Macedonia, Poland, Ukraine, the United States, and the former Yugoslavia. In addition, there are almost 140 audio interviews with Jewish and non-Jewish survivors specifically about their post-Holocaust experiences, focusing on the impact that the Holocaust has had on survivors’ lives.
There are also interviews with resistance fighters, rescuers, witnesses, collaborators, perpetrators, liberators, postwar prosecutors, and relief workers at displaced persons camps. Interviews were conducted in Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Netherlands, Romania.
The interviews in Belarus, Poland, Ukraine and Israel with survivors were conducted in partnership with Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University.
Below is a list of organizations that have donated their collections to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: This list does not include the hundreds of donations made by individuals of single interviews. Nor does it include the list of oral histories produced by the Museum or the Museum's own Department of Oral History:
