GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:At the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp, the SS imprisoned over 130,000 women and children; and approximately 20,000 men. Today, the Ravensbrück Memorial Museum keeps records and encourages remembrance and research. It was founded in 1959.

The former concentration camp was used by the Soviet army following the end of World War II. With the withdrawal of the Soviet military from the former concentration camp terrain, the Ravensbrück Memorial Museum became part of the newly founded Brandenburg Memorials Foundation in 1993. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary celebration of the liberation, the camp entrance area was open to the public in 1995.

In recent years, two long-term and more than 200 special exhibitions have been shown. Research has intensified, educational programs have been re-designed, and the collections department has been enlarged.

Since 1993, the holdings of the Museum have expanded and are better catalogued than in previous years.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The Ravensbrück Memorial Museum is in the process of building up a collection of audio and video testimonies of survivors from the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp (1939-1945). The archive also holds almost 1000 reports of survivors, primarily written between 1945-1955.

The Ravensbrück Memorial Museum has worked together with filmmaker Loretta Walz to produce interviews with witnesses who were imprisoned in Ravensbrück. The video interviews are life stories of former female prisoners from Ravensbrück, Lichtenburg and Moringen. When possible, in-depth interviews are conducted on the territory of the former Ravensbrück camp.

As of October, 2001, there were about 130 interviews in all; 120 with women, ten with men.

The video interviews of female ex-prisoners from the Ravensbrück concentration camp began in 1980. They mainly include German women. After the collapse of the government of the German Democratic Republic in 1989, a new series of interviews was conducted with women from the former East Germany, as well as Poland, who had been subjected to medical experiments in Ravensbrück. The most recent interviews include those with women who worked in the "Siemens Camp" in Ravensbrück run by the company of the same name.

More interviews are planned with Czech and Slovenian women, as well as those from other European countries.
