| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: | The Concentration Camp Memorial of Neuengamme is dedicated to transmitting the history of that concentration camp to sensitize individuals to the violations of human rights and for the development of democratic thought and behavior. The central mission mandates a documentation center where research about the consequences of the violent National Socialism rule takes place.
Historical Background of Neuengamme:
In December 1938, the SS moved one hundred inmates from the concentration camp Sachsenhausen to an empty brickwork in Hamburg-Neungamme, which became an independent concentration camp in summer, 1940. During the war, ten of thousands of people were deported there as prisoners from across occupied Europe by the Gestapo and the SS Sicherheitsdienst (intelligence service). In Neuengamme and in more than 80 satellite camps, which were installed for the armanents industry in 1942, the prisoners became slave laborers. Living and working conditions in Neuengamme were terrible. Approximately 55,000 of the 106,000 inmates at Neuengamme died.
In 1953, A memorial column was inaugurated on the site of the former concentration camp nursery. In 1965, the concentration camp itself was transformed into a memorial site.
In February 1984, following a decree by the senate of Hamburg, all buildings and grounds of the former concentration camp outside the correction center were place under protection as historic sites.
In May, 1995, in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation, a new permanent exhibition was opened in the former Walther-Werke. The exhibition shows a model of the concentration camp, the inside of the barracks and numerous authentic objects. At the heart of the exhibition are the testimonies spoken by survivors, of which excerpts can be heard in a separate auditorium. |

| OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION: | Between 1991 and 1994 academic specialists connected with the Neuengamme Memorial conducted an Oral History Project, whereby more than 100 former inmates of the Neuengamme concentration camp or its satellities were interviewed about their life stories. Most of the former prisoners who were interviewed were political (red badges on their uniforms). Thirty-two interviewees were Jews.
In addition to the oral history project of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial there are approximately 1500 written testimonies of former inmates of the concentration camp. |
