GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was erected in 1936-1937. It acquired a special role within the concentration camp system because of its proximity to Berlin and to the Gestapo headquaters in Prinz Albrecht Strasse.

Approximatelly 200,000 prisoners from almost forty nations were incarcerated at Sachsenhausen. It is estimated that 100,000 prisoners were murdered there.

The camp was liberated in April 1945 by Russian and Polish troops. The Soviet Military Administration established the "Special Camp No. 7" on the grounds of the recently emptied concentration camp. Within five years, between 50,000 and 60,000 people were imprisoned there and at least 13,000 prisoners died of hunger, disease, cold amd maltreatment.

In 1961, Sachsenhausen was inaugurated as the Third National Memorial Site in the German Democratic Republic. Since 1993, the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum belong to the Brandenburg Memorial Foundation, following a decentralized concept in which certain buildings and places are associated with particular historical events. New exhibitions have been presented on such topics as Jewish prisoners in Sachsenhausen, the history of Concentration Camp Oranienburg and the fate of the July 20th prisoners. Further exhibitions are planned within the framework of the decentralized museum.
