| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: | The mission of the Topography of Terror Foundation is to provide historical information about National Socialism and its crimes as well as to stimulate active confrontation with this history and its impact since 1945.
Since 1987 the Topography of Terror has existed on the „Prinz-Albrecht-Terrain“, explaining with its documentary exhibition the historical significance of this place. Between 1933 and 1945, the central institutions responsible for the repressive and criminal policies of National Socialism were located at this site. At this "site of the perpetrators", important decisions were made concerning the persecution of political opponents, the "Germanisation" of occupied territories in Poland and the Soviet Union, the murder of Soviet prisoners of war and the genocide of the European Jews.
In addition to the main exhibition, the Foundation also created special and travelling exhibitions on different subjects relating to the history of National Socialism. The Foundation presents lectures and discussions, specialised and pedagogical seminars as well as international study tours. |

| OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION: | In May 1933 the newly formed Secret State Police (Gestapo) moved with its headquarter into the building Prinz-Albrecht-Straße 8. In the late summer of 1933, a prison was established in the cellar of this office. The "house prison", with its 39 cells, served to confine prisoners whose interrogation was of particular interest to the Gestapo. Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse 8 was particularly notorious for its brutal torture methods, whose victims were primarily Communists, Social Democrats, trade unionists, members of smaller socialist groups and resistance organisations, and others who refused to be repressed by the regime.
The fate of the former inmates is the main topic of the Foundation's oral history project, which began in 1989. At the beginning, project managers were confronted with a very difficult archival situation, as the Gestapo had managed to destroy most of the prison documents during the last days of the war. Therefore it was very difficult to find out the names of former inmates. The main topics of the interviews are the reasons for arrest (political resistance), experiences in prison, interrogations and subsequent arrests in other prisons or concentration camps. The interviews are first conducted on audiocassettes and then transfered in digital recordings and transcribed into word documents. |
