GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Imperial War Museum was established at the end of the First World War specifically to portray the lives and contributions of "ordinary men and women". The sound archive was added in 1972 to collect personal reminiscences.

The Imperial War Museum opened a permanent Holocaust gallery in June 2000.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The Sound Archive began a project interviewing refugees on the Holocaust theme in the 1970's. By the spring of 2005, there were over 800 recordings (over 2500 hours) of men and women with memories of particular relevance to the Holocaust. The interviews have been summarized.

All interviews are on reel-to-reel (preservation copy) and cassette (public listening copy) and increasingly preserved and accessible digitally.

This is exclusively a sound archive; videos would be copied to audio or preserved in the film and video archive.
