| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: | The Dutch government established Westerbork as a national camp for German Jewish refugees in 1939. In 1942 it was designated as a transit camp for Dutch Jews and others. Thousands were sent East to be killed by the Nazis -- 93 transports in all. After the war, the site remained in use. But in 1971, the last barracks were destroyed and eventually construction was initiated for a permanent exhibition, as well as physical representation of life in Westerbork. |
