| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: | Wewelsburg Castle dates back to the 12th century. In 1934, it was rented by Heinrich Himmler and it eventually became a pseudo-religious cult center and a representative center for the SS-Gruppenfuehrer (section leaders). A concentration camp was established in Wewelsburg -- KZ Niederhagen -- whose prisoners worked as slave laborers to create a new castle complex. The castle was almost completely destroyed (except for the outer walls) in 1945 by a special SS squad. Reconstruction of the castle began in 1949 and was completed in 1979. Within this new complex there is a Castle Museum and a youth hostel.
The Kreismuseum Wewelsburg houses documents about he Wewelsburg Building Project of the SS as well as documents about KZ Niederhagen. |
