| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: | The Arbeitskreis Stadtgeschichte e.V./ Gedenk und Documentationstätte KZ Drütte is a non-profit civic organization based in Salzgitter, Germany. The purpose of the organization is to reach and publicize local aspects of the Nazi period in Salzgitter, with particular emphasis on the fate of those individuals who were incarcerated at the Drütte Concentration Camp.
The association was formed as a result of a book published in the early 1980's called "Forced Labor in the Steel Industry" by Gerd Wysocki (Zwangsarbeit im Stahlkonzern). The book detailed the conditions at the Drütte Concentration Camp (established by the SS in the town of Watenstedt-Salzgitter in 1942). It was the largest satellite camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp. Drütte provided forced laborers for the German Goering Works, an armaments factory.
Today the armanents factory is no longer - but the area of the former concentration camp is once more in industrial use. Some space of the current industrial territory was allocated for a memorial site in 1992. The Arbeitskreis Stadtgeschichte is the custodian of this memorial.
The organization maintains contacts with former prisoners, publishes various books on related subjects, and offers guided tours of the site of the memorial. On display are some of the life stories of the former inmates.
The archive relating to the Drütte concentration camp belongs to the Memorial. |
