| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: | The Working Group/Society of the former Concentration Camp Flossenbürg was founded by the town/municipality of Flossenbürg, next to the former site of the concentration camp of Flossenbürg.
From 1938 until 1945, Flossenbürg was in operation and between 65,000 and 100,000 people were incarcerated there.
After the war ended, the Flossenbürg camp was used temporarily to lodge prisoners of war, UNRRA and refugees. In 1946, the idea for a memorial was introduced. That same year work was begun on a chapel and a graveyard. The "Valley of Death", with its graves, was laid out in the 1950's. Today some of the grounds of the former concentration camp are used as a housing project. The quarry - which is what slave labor in the concentration camp was used for - is now run by a private concern. |
