GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada was founded in May 1968 as the Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada. In 1999, it amalgamated with functions as the standing committee on history, research and archives of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Its objectives are to gather, record, preserve and present the history and the religious and cultural heritage of the Jewish people of Western Canada. The Society has collected 4000 photographs, 400 shelf feet of textual records, memorabilia, artifacts and an extensive oral history program, numbering over 500 interviews.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:In the oral history program, the Society interviews individuals in a variety of contexts: Holocaust survivors, people in the needle trades, and the trade union movement, veterans of World War II, residents of certain streets and neighborhoods in Western Canada for a glimpse into a Jewish milieu, members of three generation families to determine changes in attitudes and mores in Jewish life, and Jewish personalities and pioneers in general. Summary transcripts are made of all interviews to provide easy access to the material. To date the Society has completed over 550 interviews. They range from 20 to 90 minutes in length, and cover a variety of topics including: Early Pioneers, Holocaust, World War II, Business, Arts, Sports, and others. Many of the interviews include summaries that range from 2 to 6 pages in length. These projects began in 1960. Since many of the tapes are quite old and historically valuable, a project was completed to re-record them.

Their interviews do not deal with any specific aspect of the Holocaust and are limited to the survivors who have settled in Winnipeg or the immediate vicinity.
