GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Holocaust Centre is dedicated to remembering the Shoah and educating the community and future generations.
Visitors view an audio-visual presentation portraying the experiences of European Jews before, during and after World War II. They have an opportunity to meet with a survivor speaker to hear about his/her experiences in the Holocaust. Visitors are also guided through the small museum which houses artifacts from the Holocaust.

The Centre is committed to the advancement of public awareness of the Holocaust and offers guidance in curriculum development, professional development courses and seminars for teachers, maintain a resource lending library and a survivors speakers bureau.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:Oral History interviews document the experiences of survivors, resistance fighters, Righteous Among the Nations, and liberators of concentration camps through audio and video tapes.

The Centre's collection reflects a cross section of the Holocaust experince - western, central and eastern European Jews, and a few from southern Europe. Wartime experiences include camps, passing, hiding, resistance and refugees and the birth dates of interviewees range from 1895 to the 1940's.

Volunteer interviewers were trained and usually supervised before being permitted to do solo interviews. Some interviews were conducted over several different days, but studio time was limited to two hours.
The "definition" of survivor was any Jew who lived in Nazi-occupied or allied regions, and German and Austrian Jewish refugees. This includes refugees interned in Canada 1940-1944 as "enemy aliens". It does not include Jews whose entire wartime experience was in Soviet controlled areas (although they have a few examples). Interviews were conducted with survivors primarily resident in the Greater Toronto area, although some were conducted with survivors from another parts of Canada.

The oral history interview program took place between 1985 and 1994 and is now complete. There are about 400 interviews (representing some 800 hours of video tape). About 50 interviews were conducted per year. Originals are on 3/4" U-matic tape; copies on VHS.
