| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: | Created in 1994, the mission of the Fondation de la Mémoire Contemporaine is to increase knowledge about the history of Belgium's Jewish community during the 20th century and its contribution to the nation. To that end, the Fondation strives both to assemble the greatest possible collection of documentation and to lead research on this subject. |

| OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION: | An essential part of the Foundation's work is its production of oral history testimony documenting the pre-war, wartime, and post-war experiences of Belgium's Jewish population. Interviews illustrate such themes as Jewish flight from Belgium, resistance, detention in Malines prison, deportation, hidden children, post-war immigration to Israel, and the life of war orphans in children's shelters. The Foundation plans in the future to interview the children of survivors.
The objective of interviews is to assemble testimonies sufficiently representative of all aspects of the Jewish presence in Belgium before and during World War II. In addition, there are oral history projects focused on more specific aspects of this subject, such as life in the Jewish community of Anvers (Antwerp).
The Foundation is undertaking an inventory of oral history testimonies in Belgium and other countries related to the history of Jews in Belgium. Once, the inventory is completed, the Fondation plans to obtain copies of the interviews or their transcriptions, in order to facilitate the work of researchers.
To date, the Fondation has 150 Holocaust testimonies (70 women; 80 men). The interviewees fall into the following categories: Jews, political prisoners, prisoners of war, resisters, partisans, refugees, rescuers, liberators, prosecutors, refugee relief workers.
About 120 interviews, comprising over 500 hours, are on audio tape. Over 30 interviews, comprising over 120 hours, are on videotape.
All audio interviews have been transcribed: only some of the video have been. There are summaries of the transcripts available. |
