GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Safe Haven Museum and Education Center is dedicated to keeping alive the stories of the 982 refugees from World War II who were allowed into the United States as "guests" of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. These refugees were housed at Fort Ontario in Oswego, New York, from August 1944 until February 1946.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:They have a collection of more than 20 tapes that include interviews of 60 former refugees of the Fort Ontario Emergency Shelter. They also have conducted eight interviews with Oswegonians who had special connections with the only WWII refugee camp for Holocaust survivors on American soil.

The story of the refugees and the camp is shared in several books, most notably Dr. Ruth Gruber's "Haven: The Unknown Story of 4000 World War II Refugees".

The USHMM has a complete set of their interviews.

Oral interviews were conducted by history intern at State University of New York at Oswego. Video interviews were conducted by WRVO National Public Radio News Director, Chris Ullanowski.

The collection is also available at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.
