GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Holocaust Oral History Archive is a special collection of the Tuttleman Library of Gratz College. The Archive is a contributing organization to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The Oral History Archive organizers at Gratz College were interested in a range of Holocaust experiences. However, an unplanned focus on Polish and German experience (almost entirely Jewish) emerged. There is also a special collection of American military personnel, including witnesses to the liberation, liberators, POW's, and medical staff.

The project design was established by founder Professor Nora Levin to focus on pre-war experiences and 1933-1945 only. Post-Holocaust experience was to be explored if the interviewee continued in his/her desire to talk. The general line of questioning developed according to country. Interview techniques stressed open-ended questions (as well as factual details) to facilitate a rich description of experience. In general the interviewing style fell somewhere between not totally structured and not totally free association either.

All interviewers were trained and supervised by the Director.

The collection is in the process of being transcribed and catalogued. All cataloging including summaries is available on OCLC once completed.
