Mr. Joseph Geliebter, Ph.D.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:In 1988, Dr. Joseph Geliebter, a clinical psychologist, founded the Rabbi Leib Geliebter Memorial Foundation in memory of his father, a Torah scholar and Holocaust survivor.
One of the key missions of the Foundation is to properly honor the memory of the Jews who were killed during the Holocaust. An important objective is to capture the spiritual heroism of the survivors during the years of the ghettos and camps.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The interviews were professionally videotaped in homes and other preferred places designated by the survivors. Lighting, audio quality, etc. were carefully controlled. Interviewers were people who have had much experience with interview techniques with Holocaust survivors and the subject matter. Although the interviewers were given guidelines, they were free to follow their professional instinct to ensure an appropriate atmosphere for the interviewees. The original videotapes are stored in a controlled environment.

The questions of the interviewer included the role of religion, culture, and Jewish education of pre-war life. Questions were focused on the importance of these roles before, during, and after the Holocaust. Religious and spiritual survival were areas covered in addition to general documentation of experiences.
