GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:Oral histories were central to the development of the museum exhibition on the role of Jewish soldiers in camp liberations. Their stories, together with their on-site photos, artifacts, and memorabilia were at the heart of the exhibition: "GI's Remember: Liberating the Concentration Camps". This exhibition was on display at the National Museum of American Jewish Military History from April 1993 to the end of December 1995.

All but three of the accounts were audiotaped: two were taken in longhand and transcribed, one was videotaped. Ten of the personal accounts were audiotaped and later videotaped for the film "We Were There" by Dane Hansen Productions which was shown on numerous PBS stations.

Except for eliciting certain basic information on background prior to military service and pertinent dates and places of military actions leading to camp liberations, the taped interviews did not follow a standard format. Each interview flowed from each liberator's personal experiences and their aftermath.
