GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Holocaust Resource Center (HRC) at Kean College was established in 1982. The center is located in the Kean College Library and is co-sponsored by the college and Holocaust Resource Foundation.

The main activities of the center are:

To teach and encourage public school teachers, especially on the secondary level, to incorporate Holocaust units into social studies and literature curricula.

To house print and nonprint media in the Kean College Library and the Instructional Resource Center. Books and media are made available to students, teachers in neighboring school districts, and residents of the vicinity.

To sponsor lectures each year that will be open to Kean College as well as residents of the community.

To produce and preserve a series of oral history videotapes based on the personal experiences of Holocaust survivors who reside in this community.

The Diversity 2000 Council is an important aspect of the Kean University Holocaust Resource Center and consists of 77 school districts in New Jersey. The Center provides teacher training to these school districts and supplies the materials to be used in the classrooms.

OVERVIEW OF ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION:The oral history testimonies provide information on a survivor and the fate of members of his or her family. Some tapes are related to the original founding of the Elizabeth Jewish community.

The collection is primarily on video format. Audio interviews are copies of the video. There are a few instances where an interview was recorded only on audio.

Some testimonies are also available at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
