In the early 1970s, Julien Bryan recounted a trip to Poland before the war: “[We] had just come from the Soviet Union; we had worked there several summers. To work for a month or two in Poland was real contrast.” Jules Bucher, another cameraman on Bryan’s team, said that arriving in Warsaw was “something of a culture shock.” The images that they captured in 1936 as they explored the city with their cameras are especially poignant knowing that many of the modern shops and streets that appear in this footage were destroyed during the German attack on Warsaw in September 1939.
