Nazi Camps in the Occupied Soviet Territories
September 19–20, 2011
Paris, France

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, in association with Yahad–In Unum, the Université Paris-IV Sorbonne, and the École Normale Supérieure, is co-organizing a symposium on Nazi camps in the Soviet Union. This two-day gathering will be held in Paris, September 19–20, 2011, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union.

World War II led to the deaths of at least twenty million people in the Soviet Union, many of whom died in Nazi camps. Nevertheless, the history, functions, and rates of death in these camps have been relatively ignored in scholarship. This symposium will focus on these camps and question if our understanding of concentration and extermination camps in other Nazi-occupied territories is relevant to the Soviet experience.
