Meet our Survivor Volunteers

Frank Ephraim

“The way the trip went was we left one evening, went to the local railroad station in Berlin, that at that time was called Anhalterbahnhof. It no longer exists as such. Hopped on a train. It was a sleeper. We went overnight, changed in Munich, next morning, and from there we began to head toward Italy, the border. We went through Austria, and the train was stopped in Brenner, Brenner pass, which is the border between Austria and Italy. There everybody had to get out. The German side, we were searched, body search, all the luggage was searched. That delayed everything. The train left without us. We had to wait another six hours for the next train.”

[Kurt] And then we got on the ship [the Queen Mary] and … uh … that was quite an adventure for a little boy such a big ship.

[Interviewer] What was that like for you?

[Kurt] Oh, I had a wonderful time on the ship, although … uh … the passage was a little bit … it was a little bit stormy on that passage. I didn’t particularly get seasick, but my parents did have a little bit of seasickness. I can remember there were a lot of activities for children … they’d organized play, I can remember playing on the ship with some of the other children and … I can still remember it was the first time that I ever ate Brussel Sprouts, was on the Queen Mary. Um … I didn’t know what Brussel Sprouts were, until I got on the Queen Mary. And then we arrived in New York … uh … I guess the trip on the Queen Mary was rather fast, it was like 5 and a half days to get to New York from Le Havre. And there we stayed in New York for a couple of days and then went by train to Cincinnati which is where my uncle was living and we moved to Cincinnati, Ohio.
