Abstract:
- "When United States troops entered Germany at the end of World War II, they seized all sorts of German records and brought them back to the United States. Among these were lists of Jews deported from Germany and extensive material from concentration camp records, primarily from camps located in the United States occupied zone of Germany, but also from other camps. Before the original documents were sent back to Germany and given to the International Red Cross at Arolsen, microfilmed copies were made and given to the United States National Archives (NARA). These were held in NARA under the rubric "Captured German Records". Although this microfilm collection was available for public inspection, they were not included in NARA's official inventory/catalog, and little use was made of the collection. A few years ago, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) purchased copies of these microfilms and this year (2001) a rough catalog of the collection's contents was prepared. The sheer size of the collection, 189 reels of microfilm -- i.e. approximately 189,000 frames or pages -- made this task very difficult, but it is a beginning to understanding what this valuable collection contains."--Introduction, "The 'Captured German Records' Collection: a JewishGen InfoFile" by Peter W. Lande at http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/CapturedGermanRecords.html.
- Note: As of September 2009 an agreement has been reached between the National Archives and Records Administration and Footnote.com to begin placing image scans of these records online at http://go.footnote.com/holocaust_records/. Normally a fee-based or subscription service, Footnote.com is providing free access to the public through October 2009 to such records from this collection titled "National Archives Holocaust Records" as have been electronically scanned to date (approx. 2% of total). By virtue of a similar cooperative agreement between the U.S. Holocaust Memorial (USHMM) and Footnote.com, all information and materials supplied by USHMM will always remain accessible to the public free of charge, and USHMM staff and visitors will enjoy full and free access from any USHMM Museum Network computer to all Footnote.com resources, even those outside of the scope of the joint agreement, via http://www.footnote.com.
