    Jewish soldiers in Palestine perform military exercises

    Overview

    Description
    Palestinian troops wearing helmets and carrying bayonets rush up a hill through an arch in a stone structure (IWM identifies it as an old city castle). LS of troops aiming their rifles from the top of the stone wall. Two soldiers stand sentry beside a Star of David flag atop the stone wall (battlement?). Jewish soldiers, smiling, talking, smoking, one gives the camera a thumbs up. A soldier operates a field phone with a board of international codes hanging on the wall. Soldiers perform various military exercises. Captured German soldiers under guard of the Palestinian troops cross a desert field. Prisoners seated in the back of a truck.

    The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum purchased the film excerpts from the Imperial War Museum in October 2009.
    Note
    IWM Notes: all five parts of AYY 208 are compiled onto a single reel. The USHMM purchased three sections (98 ft; 147 ft; 44 ft)

    IWM Summary: The dope sheet refers to this unit as the British Foreign Legion and as a Palestinian unit of the British army. It states that the unit includes men from Poland, Rumania, Hungary, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Greece and Bulgaria and that it has seen service at Dunkirk, Crete, Greece and the Western Desert.
