Lord Robert Gilbert Vansittart was a British diplomat, author, and extreme Germanophobe. He was first secretary at the Paris Peace Conference and principal private secretary to Lord Curzon and to successive prime ministers. As permanent under secretary at the Foreign Office (1930-1938), he warned the British government of the growing military power of Germany and insisted that Great Britain should rearm. He was regarded by Neville Chamberlain as a hindrance to the British government's efforts to reach a settlement with Hitler.
