Russian DPs celebrate V-E Day; surrendering German officers and soldiers; former prisoner display tattoos

    Overview

    Description
Sustained long shot of the bomb-damaged city of Wiesbaden. A handheld slate identifies the cameraman as Captain Carter and the date as May 8, 1945. Long shot of a large white building with a red star on top of it. Russian DP's decorate a platform in front of the building with red banners and portraits of Stalin and Zhukov for a celebration of V-E Day. Russian DP's holding portraits and flags parade around the square. Several people give speeches to the assembled crowd. The second speaker wears an UNRRA patch on his shirt and speaks through an interpreter. A woman wearing a black cap and a man in a Soviet military uniform speak. Pan of the crowd listening to the speakers. 01:05:45 A group of DP's marches away; a man films them as they go. More shots of the parading DP's. The camera pans up past the red star on the building to American planes flying overhead.

01:08:32 A slate identifies the cameraman as Lindsay. Long shot down a city street in Germany. White flags hang from the house windows. A long convoy of vehicles and horse-drawn wagons filled with surrendering German soldiers. A group of captured Germans stand in a field as American soldiers inspect their confiscated rifles. A Wehrmacht officer gives orders to his soldiers. Close-up on loaves of bread in the arms of a German. A very young German soldier sits behind the wheel of a vehicle and smiles at the camera. A nun talks to a German. More shots of the convoy. 01:10:47 Close up of an American soldiers talking to former prisoners. One of the men is black (French POW?) and wears a striped prisoner cap. A triangle badge on one man's coat is visible briefly. Close-ups of tattoos on the arms of former prisoners. 01:11:21 New slate. Low aerial shots of vehicles and people on the road and in green fields. Many surrendered German troops. 01:19:15 A Wehrmacht officer talks to German and American soldiers. An American soldiers stands beside a man in an Arbeitsdienst uniform. Close-ups of the German. Slow pan across a field filled with tents and German POW's.
