I was horrified to read about the senseless and brutal slaying of Officer Johns. He seemed like such a kind man, someone who didn’t deserve to die while committing a simple act of kindness.

I feel particularly grateful for Officer Johns’ contribution to keeping the Holocaust Museum safe for all visitors because I am a first generation American born citizen. Both my parents are Holocaust survivors who endured horrible experiences under the Nazis and emigrated to the United States. My mother, who was Polish, lost every single member of her family except her parents – over 250 people. My father, who was born in Czechoslovakia, lost his father, a sister, a niece and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Both my parents lost their childhood to a hate-filled world of evil. The fact that after so many years, the same acts of hatred continue to occur fills me with such deep sadness.

There are no words that I feel adequate to convey my sorrow, but I wish to express it to you nonetheless. I truly hope you find comfort at this time from family, friends, and the sincere good wishes of so many strangers who were touched by Officer Johns.
