Jacqueline Mendels Birn "A Dimanche Prochain: A Memoir of Surival in World War II France"
Jacqueline Mendels Birn presents her newly published memoir "A Dimanche Prochain" at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for the first time. Her story is a unique one, as are all stories of survival during this dark period of history. She was born in France and experienced it's invasion and then occupation by the Nazis from 1940-1944. Her story is different because she survived in Vichy France, the collaborationist French regime that controlled southern France. Though somewhat autonomous they too were deporting their Jewish prisoners to the concentration camp system in the east. As her story tells us even in this morally ambiguous world there were people willing to risk their lives to help a little girl.
