Outwitting Hitler

While researching in the Museum’s archives, filmmaker Christopher Ward located a series of rare photographs that illustrated an important event he wanted to include in his film Outwitting Hitler, on the life story of a 17-year-old art student, Marian Pretzel, who was living in Poland when World War II began. Pretzel used his skills as an artist to forge Nazi documents that ultimately saved his life and the lives of other European Jews. Initially incarcerated as a forced laborer in a concentration camp, Pretzel escaped. Once free, he made his way to Russia using his forged documents to procure a German paramilitary uniform. He rode on trains with German soldiers and ate and slept in German barracks.

A discussion with the filmmaker and a Museum expert follows the screening.
