UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM CONDEMNS HOLOCAUST DENIAL FROM GREEK GOLDEN DAWN PARTY LEADER
WASHINGTON, DC — The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum strongly condemns the remarks made by Greek Golden Dawn party leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos denying the Holocaust and the existence of gas chambers.
“Holocaust denial is always dangerous, but it is particularly so during times of political and economic volatility such as Greece is currently experiencing,” says Museum Director Sara J. Bloomfield. “We are encouraged by the Greek government’s denunciation of these remarks and hope that all aspects of Greek society will reject antisemitism in Greek political life.”
Around 60,000 Greek Jews perished in the Holocaust, out of a population of nearly 72,000 in 1941. More information on the Holocaust in Greece can be found in the Museum’s online encyclopedia. A portion of the Museum’s website has been translated into Greek.
A living memorial to the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum inspires citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity. Federal support guarantees the Museum’s permanent place on the National Mall, and its far-reaching educational programs and global impact are made possible by generous donors.
