UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM OUTRAGED AT DESECRATION OF AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU SITE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum expressed outrage at the theft of the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” (“Work Sets You Free”) sign from the entrance of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.

The sign is an iconic symbol of the Holocaust and represents the evil that was perpetrated at Auschwitz. A casting of the sign is on display in the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition, “The Holocaust.” The Museum urges anyone with information about this brazen attack to come forward.

A living memorial to the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum was created to inspire leaders and citizens to confront hatred, prevent genocide, promote human dignity and strengthen democracy. Federal support guarantees the Museum’s permanence, and donors nationwide make possible its educational activities and global outreach. For more information, visit www.ushmm.org.
