[USHMM #93865/Rinjiro Sodei, Japan; Original materials: Watercolor, gouache, and ink on paper; Original framed dimensions: 17 9/10" x 17 9/10", 6.5" x 6" visible image] The Son of Heaven, 1945 Hirohito ruled as the emperor of Japan from 1926 until his death in 1989. During his reign, Japanese armies invaded Manchuria and the rest of China, joined the Axis powers, and expanded militarily throughout east Asia. In this image, Szyk lampoons Hirohito, regarded as a divine ruler by his supporters, by parodying a noted photograph showing the emperor on horseback. |
