We're Running Short of Jews, 1943

Dedicated
to Szyk's mother, this drawing reflected both the calculated and ongoing nature of the Nazi "Final Solution" as well as American knowledge of the Holocaust. The note on the desk announcing the killing of two million Jews refers to the figure publicized in November 1942 and confirmed by the State Department. In July 1943, the drawing appeared as an editorial cartoon in PM under the title "We Are Running Out of Jews."
Szyk's mother was deported to the Chelmno killing center in September 1942; however, Szyk never knew exactly what happened to his mother and brother. After the war, he composed this dedication:
In March 1943 my beloved seventy-year-old mother, EUGENIA SZYK, was taken from the ghetto of Lodz to the Nazi furnaces of Maidanek. With her, voluntarily went her faithful servant, the good Christian, JOSEFA, a Polish peasant. Together, hand in hand, they were burned alive. In memory of the two noble martyrs I dedicate my pictures of the Bible as an eternal Kaddish for these great souls.
